Bai Qian / Cynanchum Stauntonii last update 06-2014DESCRIPTION: Rhizome of Cynanchum stauntonii are slender and cylindrical, branched and somewhat curved. 4-15 cm long, 1.5-4 mm in diameter, externally yellowish-white or yellowish-brown, internodes 1.5-4.5 cm long; Texture fragile, fracture hollowed. Numerous fine curved root and rootlets fascicled at nodes, up to 10 cm long, less than 1 mm in diameter, many branches and appearing hairy or fibrous, usually coiled together in a mass. Mild odor with a sweet taste.
Rhizome of Cynanchum glaucescens is an alternate strand. Relatively shorter and smaller, or slightly lumpy; externally grayish-green or grayish-yellow, internodes 1-2 cm long; Texture relatively hard. Roots slightly curved, about 1 mm in diameter, less branched.
Taste & Property: Pungent, bitter, slightly warm. Meridians: Lung.
ACTION: To eliminate phlegm and relieve cough.
INDICATIONS: Cough with copious expectoration and dyspnea.

This herb can be used in combination with Herba Ephedrae, Flos Farfarae, Semen Armeniacae Amarum, Radix Glycyrrhizae, etc. In treating cough and asthma with yellow and sticky sputum difficult to be expectorated due to lung-heat, the herb can be used in combination with Cortex Mori Radicis, Radix Rehmanniae, Cortex Lycii Radicis, etc. In treating cough due to exogenous wind-cold, the herb is often used in combination with Herba Schizonepetae, Radix Platycodi, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, etc.
